Free the Bears - Laos

Kham's story

Home

Asias native bear populations are under threat from illegal bile farmers, exotic pet owners and restaurants trading in bear paw soup.

During our recent Giving Back tour Travel with Me members visited the Luang Prabang Free the Bears Sanctuary and were given the unique opportunity to tour behind the scenes and prepare treats for the bears. We met Jane who has given 5 and 1/2 years so far dedicating her life to improving and enriching the lives of these beautiful bears. It is an incredible project so we have decided to help by raising money to sponsor Kham.

Every Saturday morning at 7.00 you can help by walking for Free the Bears. If you are in Perth you can join us on a 10km walk around the bridges and donate a gold coin to help sponsor Kham. If you are in another capital city and would like to help with a similar walk please contact Travel with Me and we will help coordinate this for you.

Khams Bio

Kham, which means ‘Gold’ in Lao, is about 7 years old and was brought to our rescue centre in Laos after she was confiscated along with her brother Deng by the local government. Both were brought in as terrified young cubs after the strong likelihood their poor mother was killed in the wild.

They would probably have been sold to bile farms and faced a life of unimaginable pain and suffering had they not been rescued and brought to our Free The Bears forested sanctuary.

Kham is easy to pick out with her beautiful long slender face and bright eyes and is one of the most intelligent bears at the rescue centre. She continues to share a special bond with her brother, assuming the role of caring and more sensible sister to mischievous Deng and is quite happy to playfully bat him around the head if he is annoying her.

She enjoys the more challenging enrichment items such as the barrel feeder and treat balls and can often be seen extracting her favourite foods from these. She is so determined that she will persevere and spend a number of hours removing every last morsel although her favourite foods are papaya and honey.
