We all know the world is full of unique destinations and experiences….that’s why we travel. I believe there is nothing more incredible than witnessing or even better, participating in one of the many amazing festivals held around the world. I am sure if someone checked it out we would find that there is a festival taking place somewhere in the world nearly every minute of every day. Some are religious, some historical, some outrageous and some even controversial. What they all have in common is a celebration and a bringing together of people. I think this is what makes them such fantastic travel experiences, you get to learn about the local culture and way of life direct from the locals. You are up close and personal with them, standing next to them watching a parade, saying cheers in another language, for that short time you really are part of their community, perhaps the best thing, the locals love you being involved as much as you do. I have been lucky enough to experience many festivals on my travels and some of my special moments include: drinking Bellini on the side of a canal watching the boat parade at the Venice Carnivale, wearing an ‘Inca Cola’ hat as I watched the endless stream of colourful dancers going by at the Candelaria festival beside Lake Titicaca in Peru, watching ‘the 3 manly sports’ demonstrated at Mongolia’s Naadam festival.
